Principle:
Paracetamol pediatric elixir is used for antipyretic and analgesic for children. Which contain 2.4% w/v paracetamol. Paracetamol is sparingly soluble water and freely soluble in alcohol. Therefore, alcohol used to dissolve drug. Propylene glycol acts as co solvent to increase the solubility. Glycerine acts as vehicle to increase the viscosity of the preparation. It is miscible with alcohol, Propylene glycol and invert syrup. Chloroform acts as preservative. Concentrated raspberry juice acts flavouring agent. Amaranth solution acts as colouring agent. Paracetamol possess bitter taste, therefore invert syrup is used as sweetening agent to mask the taste of drug simple syrup cannot be used as sweetning agent because sucrose is insoluble in alcohol.
Procedure:
Depending upon the quantity of preparation to be submitted the working formula is calculated
- Alcohol, propylene glycol and chloroform sprit and raspberry juice are mixed.
- Dissolve weighed quantity of paracetamol in the above mixture and mix well to dissolve completely
- Invert syrup is added and mix it with above mixture
- Add amaranth solution and make up the volume with glycerin to produce required quantity.
- The preparation is transferred into a light resistant container .
- The bottle is capped, labelled, polished and submitted.
