Aim : To prepare, label and submit 30ml of turpentine liniment IP
Apparatus:
- Beaker
- Glass rod
- Measuring cylinder
- Mortar & Pestle
- Water bath
Formula:

Principle:
This is an o/w type emulsion. Soft soap is emulsifying agent, which emulsifies oil in water. Camphor and turpentine are counter irritant and rubefacient. Turpentine also acts as solvent for camphor. Freshly rectified turpentine oil should be used otherwise good emulsion is not observed or may become discolored upon storage.
Procedure:
- Dissolve camphor in turpentine oil and soft soap in water
- Add camphor solution to soap solution with continuous trituration till thick creamy emulsion is formed
- Transfer to bottle, measuring cylinder make up the volume to the desired level with water
- Label and dispense
Category: Counter irritant and rubefacient( when applied locally produces redness of skin by causing dilatation of capillaries and an increase in blood circulation)
Storage: Store in a well closed amber colored glass container in cool place
Caution: Do not apply on broken skin or wound
