AIM: To prepare and submit of zinc oxide suppository.

TYPE: Semisolid dosage form.

PRINCIPLE: Zinc oxide suppository used as a antiseptic or astringent. It forms a protective barrier to prevent too much irritating contact with stools. This barrier helps to protect the irritated skin and help to make bowel movement less painful. They are effective in providing temporary relieve from itching, irritation and burning.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Clean the mould with hot water containing detergent, followed with cold water.
  2. Lubricate the mould with liquid paraffin and keep it in an inverted position in ice bath.
  3. Weigh the calculated quantity of cocoa butter in a china dish and heat it on a water bath .
  4. When three fourth of the cocoa butter has melted, remove the china dish from the water bath.
  5. Stir the melted base, until it is completely liquefied.
  6. Add calculated quantity of zinc oxide to the melted base and mix thoroughly.
  7. Transfer the mixture to the cavity of the mould and allow it to set on an Ice bath.
  8. After cooling, trim the excess of mass with sharp blade.
  9. Remove the suppositories from the mould, wipe with cloth, and submit with lable.

DOSE: Insert one at night.

STORAGE: Store in a cool place.
