Aim: To prepare , label and submit 30ml of liquid paraffin emulsion IP


Apparatus:

  • Measuring cylinder
  • Pestle and mortar

Formula:   
Ingredients Official Formula Working Formula
Liquid Paraffin 500ml 15ml
Indian gum in powder 125gm 3.75gm
Tragacanth gum in powder 5gm 0.15gm
Sodium benzoate 5gm 0.15gm
Vanillin 0.5gm 0.015gm
Glycerin 125gm 3.75gm
Chloroform 2.5gm 0.075ml
Water up to 1000ml 30ml


Principle: 

This is an o/w emulsion. Liquid paraffin is a mineral oil. It is used as laxative. Acacia is used as an emulsifying agent. Gum tragacanth increases the viscosity and stabilizes emulsion. Chloroform and sodium benzoate acts as preservative. Glycerin makes the preparation viscous and adds on taste. Vanillin is a flavoring agent. Primary emulsion formula is 3:2:1 (oil: water: gum)


Procedure:

  • Triturate liquid paraffin and chloroform with Indian gum, tragacanth gum and vanillin
  • Add 8ml of water and triturate till a stable white primary emulsion is formed 
  • Add sodium benzoate and glycerin dissolved in water with trituration
  • Transfer to wide mouthed bottle, make up the volume with water
  • Label and dispense
