AIM: To prepare and submit 30ml of Turpentine.
LINIMENT IP TYPE: O/W alkali soap emulsion (biphasic liquid for external use).

PRINCIPLE:
Turpentine liniment is used as counter irritant and rubefacient. Camphor is soluble in Turpentine oil. But not in water. At the same time turpentine oil is immiscible with water. Hence two phase system like emulsion is formed. Turpentine oil is dispersed phase. Purified water is continuous phase. Soap is an alakaline soap and act as an emulsifying agent, it produces O/W type emulsion. Emulsion type of turpentine liniment is viscous preperation, therefore easy to rub on the sikn.
PROCEDURE:
- Accuretly weigh the desired quantity of soft soap, place it in a mortar.
- Add 3ml of water and mix them well.
- Dissolve required quantity of camphor in calculated quantity of turpentine oil in a beaker
- Add gradually the camphor solution to the soap mixture with continuous trituration until thick creamy emulsion formed.
- Adjust the volume with purified water, mix well.The preparations is then transfered into light resistant container.
