Preparation of Iodine Throat Paint IP

 

AIM: To prepare and submit  20ml  of Iodine throat paint IP

SYNONYM: Mandi's Paint

FORMULA

PRINCIPLE: 

Iodine is slightly soluble in water so potassium iodide is used which reacts with iodine to form complex of poly-iodides. Glycerine is  used to increase the viscosity of the preparation and adhere well to the mucus membrane of throat. It is sweet in taste and gives warm sensation to the inflamed area. Alcohol is used as co-solvent, which increases the solubility of iodine inn water. Peppermint oil is used as a flavoring agent.

PROCEDURE:   Depending upon the quantity of preparation to be submitted the working formula is calculated

1.    Weigh the required quantity of potassium iodide and dissolve it with calculated quantity of water.
2. To this solution add fine powder iodine with continuous stirring.
3. Dissolve peppermint oil with alcohol 90% v/v in another beaker and the alcoholic solution is added to the iodine solution with continuous stirring.
4. Add the contents into measuring cylinder and add sufficient quantity of glycerine to produce the required volume.
5. The preparation is then transferred into light resistant container.
6. The bottle is capped, labelled and submitted.

CATEGORY: Antiseptic, Treatment of Tonsillitis and Pharyngitis.

DIRECTION: Apply with the help of soft brush or cotton swab.(Avoid food and water for 1hour both prior and post application of paint).

STORAGE: To be stored it in a wide mouthed container.
