Aim: To prepare, label and submit 30ml of Cresol with soap solution I.P
Apparatus required:
- Beaker
- Glass rod
- Glass funnel
- Water bath
- Measuring cylinder

Synonym: Lysol solution
Type: Monophasic liquid for in-animate objects.
Principle:
It is also called as Lysol solution. It is used as a disinfectant for floors, table-tops, working area and surgical instruments. The solubility of Cresol in water is only 3% v/v but this solution containing 50% v/v of cresol is very effective disinfectant, Soaps which form micelles above CMC. At this stage cresol is very effective disinfectant. Soaps which form micelles above CMC. At this stage cresol gets entrapped inside micelles. Thus, solubility of cresol increases. soap is formed by saponification reaction between alkali and vegetable oil while heating. Cresol with soap solution cannot be used on human beings because of its necrotic action to tissues.
Procedure:
- Dissolve potassium hydroxide in small amount of water, add to it vegetable oil. Heat on a water bath with stirring until completion of saponification(one drop of this mixture when added to water should mix without separation of oil drops)
- Continue the heating until saponification reaction, this can be confirmed by the following misicibility test.

- Remove the beaker from the water bath.
- Add cresol and mix them thoroughly.
- Finally adjust the volume with water.
Category: Disinfectant (agent that kills vegetative form of microorganisms when applied on inanimate objects)
Poison Strength: 50%v/v of cresol
Storage: Store in a well closed lead free container in cool place( disinfectant property of cresol is reduced in presence of lead).
Caution : Avoid contact with skin. Keep out of reach of children
Direction: For external use only.
REPORT: 30ml of Cresol with soap solution was prepared and submitted.
