PRINCIPLE: Cocoa butter is a fat obtain from roasted seed of theobroma cocoa belonging to sterculiaceae. It is a yellowish white solid. It has butter like consistency and chocolate like odour. It is a mixture of liquid triglycerides entrapped a network of crystalline with solid triglycerides. It is widely used rectal suppository base because it is solid at room temperatures but melts readily on contact with skin. Its melting point is 30-36C. It satisfies many requirements for an ideal base but it is not suitable for pessaries, nasal and urethral as it leaks out after melting and immiscible with mucous secretions.
PROCEDURE:
- Clean the mould with hot water containing detergent, followed with cold water.
- Lubricate the mould with liquid paraffin and keep it in an inverted position in ice bath.
- Weigh the calculated quantity of cocoa butter in a china dish and heat it on a water bath.
- When three fourthof the cocoa butter has melted, remove the china dish from the water bath.
- Stir the melted base, until it is completely liquefied.
- Transfer the mixture to the cavity of the mould and allow it to set on an ice bath.
- After cooling, trim the excess of mass with sharp blade.
- Remove the suppositories from the mould, wipe with cloth, and submit with label.
CATEGORY: Laxative.
DOSE: Insert one at night.
STORAGE: Store in a cool place.
